Congressman Ted Lieu, who won the election in 2014, has been committed to safeguarding the civil rights of the Chinese American community and other minority groups. In a fundraising dinner on March 30 he said, in recent years a couple of Chinese American scientists have been falsely accused of espionage. Mrs. Sherry Chen, a hydrologist of National Weather Service was handcuffed by federal agents in front of her coworkers in 2014. And Professor Xiaoxing Xi, the chairman of Temple University physics department, was arrested in 2015 right in front of his family and neighbors. All these scientists did nothing wrong, and were eventually cleared. This indicates there exists bias against Chinese Americans in the current judicial system.

Congressman Lieu told the audience he had written a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, urging her to launch a thorough investigation into these false cases, and asking the law enforcement agencies not to treat people based on their races and skin colors. Aside from civil rights fight, how to address global warming and better develop economy also top his agenda, said Congressman Lieu. If successfully re-elected, he looked forward to working with executive authorities to tackle air pollution, and create more jobs.
